Both of these programs are on the cusp. Both are starting to turn the corner.

But Friday night belonged to the home team - Grayslake Central.

Sparked by senior quarterback Mike Gentile and sophomore running back Joel Valdivia, the host Rams picked up its third win of the season with a convincing 28-0 victory over rival Grayslake North.

Gentile finished the game with 136 rushing yards on eight carries, while Valdivia ran for 187 yards with four touchdowns.

A big chunk of their yardage was picked up in the second half.

"We weren't happy when we went into the locker room at halftime," said Gentile, referring to his team's 7-0 lead. "It wasn't acceptable. We had to turn it up a notch."

On the opening series of the second half, Central needed only four plays to score as Valdivia capped off a 60-yard drive with a 6-yard run. The drive was sparked by a couple of quarterback keepers (14 and 26 yards) by Gentile.

Valdivia gave his team a three-touchdown lead early in the fourth quarter, when he busted several tackles on his way to a 64-yard score. He later put the game out of reach with a 2-yard TD run with 8:38 left to play.

"I'm extremely disappointed," said North coach Steve Wood. "We had a great week of practice. But we came out and fizzled."

The Knights (3-5) were limited to 116 yards. The top ground gainer was sophomore Andrew Soulis, who ran for 55 yards on 7 carries in the team's final drive of the night.

Central's defense, which notched its third shutout of the season, came up with one big play after another. The Rams recorded five quarterback sacks and they had seven other tackle-for-losses.

Senior Derrick Brown had a huge first half: two QB sacks, a tackle-for-loss and forced fumble.

Kevin Hein also was a handful. He finished with 10 tackles, including a sack and two tackles-for-loss.

Jim Sinclair helped the Rams' cause with seven tackles, including two for losses.

Mick Daly and Fred Daniels had the other sacks, while Nick Mandich finished with nine tackles and a forced fumble.

"We're physical. We've got a lot of guys who can bring it," said Goshe. "It's great to see."

Nick Castagna was the top tackler for the Knights. He had seven stops to go along with an interception.

"It wasn't pretty tonight for us," said Wood, who saw his sophomore team improve to 6-2 with a 26-7 win over the Rams in the preliminary game. "But I don't want us to lose focus on what we've done this year. We're turning the corner. You can see that."Go Rams!

The Grayslake Central Booster Club purchased a $10,000 digital editing system and end zone camera for the football program. This system provides additional enhancements to what is already one of the finest athletic complexes in Lake County. The system has been installed.

For those of you new to the program, year in and year out, the Booster Club has been a strong supporter of all GCHS athletics. The Booster Club is a volunteer organization and their revenue stream that they in turn give back to the various sports is derived almost solely from concessions. Last year they approved more than $20,000 dollars towards five different sports teams (boys and girls basketball, football, golf and baseball.

Each year, the challenge to find workers for concession stand gets more and more difficult. I am making a personal request of each family to find some time to work in the concession stand. I know each of you is busy, but the Booster Club is reaching out for help and I would like to see our football families do their part in this great cause. There are events year round that you can volunteer at. Working one night in the concession stand will help immensely.

You will be contacted regarding your required time slot for the fall season. Thank you in advance for your continued support of football and all GCHS Athletics.

Wearables, Yard Signs and Magnets

Spirit Wear items will be available to purchase at all home games. They can also be purchased through the school store. We have two new ways for you to show your Ram Pride: magnets and yard signs. The large round magnets are perfect to stick on your vehicle to declare you are a Ram supporter, and they’re only $4.00. Our yard signs can be customized to your student’s interests including many sports and arts.
Plus, you can have your own decal made to customize your sign further. Signs are $8.00 and the decals are $2.00 each.

Senior Requirements

Each year, our seniors are asked to go above and beyond as student athletes. This season, one of the responsibilities of our senior student athletes is to volunteer their time for the Colts youth football program. Each week, a group of seniors will be asked to volunteer at the home games as chain crews and even clock workers.

Dress Code

The leadership counsel decided on the following team dress codes during each game week of the football season. Please be prepared with these items once the season has begun. Each Monday of a game week, students will be required to wear khaki pants, a buttoned down shirt and a tie. On game days, students will be required to wear blue jeans and school issued game jerseys.
